Dear Readers,

Today we hear about the identification of fossil bones in a Belgian cave, Amazonian fungi that display bioactive compounds, and a new combined method to detect several poisons and toxins in food after a 2-year-old was intoxicated at home.

Also, the time for voting the BEST product innovation of 2023 has started!

Please cast your vote here.

Voting ends by October 14th 2022.

Enjoy the reading,

Forensics

Drug detection in paper

Using GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, and LC-DAD, forensic analysts in Germany have found a synthetic opioid and two synthetic cannabinoids impregnated within a letter to a prisoner.

Mass spectrometry

Species ID in fossil bones

A new proteomics approach using small sample sizes has been used to classify ten 130,000-year-old bones found in a Belgian cave. The mass spectrometric data on extracted collagens were used for species identification, matching with morphological data to reveal the presence of bears, big cats, and bovine species.

LC-MS/MS for measuring glyphosate

Sri Lankan analysts validated two LC-MS/MS methods for measuring the herbicide glyphosate and its main metabolite AMPA in both hard and freshwater samples without the need for derivatization.

Bioactive compounds

Endophytic fungi from the Amazon rainforest rich source of bioactive compounds

Scientists from the Universidade Federal de Roraima, Universidade Estadual de Maringá, MS Bioscience, and Universidade Federal do Amazonas (all in Brazil) set out to explore the diverse range of compounds produced by endophytic fungi associated with Annona jahnii Saff, 1914 using UHPLC-MS/MS and molecular networking. The endophytic fungi are a rich source of bioactive compounds.

Food poisoning: Screening for hundreds of drugs and toxins

Chinese scientists have developed a novel LC/MS/MS method to screen for 315 potentially harmful drugs in different foodstuffs and biological fluids using a mass spectral library that was constructed in-house. The method was used to confirm a real case of suspected poisoning when a two-year-old child consumed fish feed at home.
