Title: Potassium Iodide: give it timely, swiftly and judiciously
Abstract: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) grades events in the nuclear industry (including in nuclear reactors transport storage and use of radioactive materials excluding military applications) on a 7-level scale [https//www.iaea.org/resources/databases/international-nuclear-and-radiological-event-scale]. In more than 50 years there have been only two level 7 nuclear accidents (NA): in Chernobyl (CNA) in 1986 and in Fukushima (FNA) in 2011. In both CNA and FNA among other radionuclides radioactive iodine isotopes were released in the environment ([125I] [131I] [132I] and [133I]) with [131I] being the most important due to its tissue-damaging beta radiation emission. In CNA approximately a total of 50x106 Ci of [131I] were released in the environment while in FNA 4x106 Ci of [131I] were discharged in the atmosphere [1-3]. The thyroid being an iodine-avid organ is particularly vulnerable in case of a nuclear accident. This vulnerability is age-delimited the most susceptible persons are the younger ones up to age 40.
